On Saturday, June 12 from 1 to 3 pm, Clarkston fused glass artist Sherry Seeh will be conducting an introductory class on making fused glass jewelry at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn.  Students will assemble a pendant and earring set or two pendants after learning how to cut glass and assemble it.  Students should come prepared with an idea of colors they want to work with or a piece of clothing they wish to match.  The cost is $45 and includes all materials.  After the class, Seeh will fire the pieces in her kiln at home and return them to the Barn for pick up within 10 days.  This class is for students 16 and older, and is restricted to 8 participants.  Registrations must be received by noon Friday June 11, and can be made online on the calendar page at www.artisanbarn.org or by calling 509-229-3414.

Sherry works out of her home and goes by the name of MELTDOWNS Fused Glass. The name evolved and seemed so apropos for doing glass fusing and kiln work (and, sometimes in all the experimenting a person can also have a meltdown!).

Her artistic process is in determining the color scheme and then the shape and mechanics of a fused glass piece. Then, the pieces are cut and arranged, layer upon layer. Varying combinations of fusible glass pieces are used, but mostly extensive use of Dichroic glass because the coatings add depth, texture and light. Most of the glass set-ups are comprised of 2-4 layers of glass, fired to 1400-1500ºF over a period of many hours. After the initial firing, many pieces are re-shaped and then "fire-polished" by firing a second (or third) time to remove any grinding performed (done to true-up a specific shape or remove any rough edges).

On the jewelry pieces, the glass is the centerpiece of all the designs, framed by high quality findings and adorned with Swarovski crystals in many cases. Sherry also uses her playful side to create some whimsical pieces.

Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is in Uniontown on highway 195 in the big white barn behind the famous iron wheel fence.  The art center is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.  The facility is fully handicap accessible and has no daily admission fee. Information:  www.artisanbarn.org or 509-229-3414.
